Brittany have seen her mother help a lot of people but never receives anything back because they are struggling to live day by day. Some days they didn't know if they were going to eat or if they have to wear the same clothes. One day Brittany asks her mother, “Ma, why do you keep helping people? We need help ourselves.” Brittany's mother replies back, “Brittany, one day we are going to be blessed.” Brittany keeps quiet and walks outside. Brittany promise herself that she will never be in the same situation that her family is in now.
Years goes by and Brittany is older. Brittany goes to college and has a after school job. She pushes herself hard to be the best she can be. Her family and friends sees the changes in Brittany. She is never around and she doesn't help her mother anymore. Brittany is either at school, working or studying. All her friends thinks that Brittany doesn't care about them anymore. One of her friends calls her mother to see if Brittany is OK. She tells Brittany's mother that Brittany has been very distance from them. Brittany's mother is getting very concern about Brittany.
One night Brittany comes home late from work and Brittany's mother waits for her to walk in the door. Brittany walks in and sees her mother sitting in her favorite rocking chair in the livingroom. As soon as Brittany walks in her mother says, “Brittany, sit down, we need to talk.” Brittany sits down on the couch next to her mother. Her mother holds Brittany's hand and says, “Brittany, people are very concerned about you. You don't talk to your friends anymore. They feel you don't care about them. You stopped helping me and you are so busy, you don't have time for the family. What is wrong Brittany? Why are you so distance?” Brittany holds her mother's hand back and she replies back, “Ma, there is nothing wrong with me. I do care about my friends and I love my family. I love helping you. I love helping other people. Please don't take this the wrong way, Ma. You helped so many people and still do which I think that's great. But we are still living the same way since I was a kid. Ma, I have to help myself first and get myself together before I can help others. This doesn't mean, I don't care, it means I am focusing on me first.” Brittany's mother totally understands Brittany, she removes her hand from Brittany and stands up from her rocking chair and kisses Brittany on the forehead and says, “I love you my daughter” then walks in her bedroom.
A few more years went by and Brittany has finished college. Brittany is now a certified register nurse. Brittany is now taking care of people who are in need of her help. She takes care of her mother and her mother is so proud of Brittany. Brittany continues to help others.
THE TRUTH:
Putting yourself first isn't selfish. It's the first, only and overlooked step toward putting anybody else before your own needs. As human animals, we often don't do things unless we can get something out of them. When your needs are already taken care of, you can give genuinely, and without expectation.
How to Put Yourself First
*Make a list of your priorities. Keep it short.
*Ask for help from your family and your community.
*Keep a balance between treating yourself and giving to others.
*Remember putting yourself first sometimes involves doing things that are difficult, but benefit you in the long run.
CONCONCLUSION:
Just because you are putting yourself first doesn't mean you don't care. You have to help yourself first before you can help others. Yourself is the first priority. If people don't understand that then that is a serious problem. You cannot put people before yourself.
